We are greatly saddened by the loss of our Founder H.E. Tan Sri Dr. Surin Abdul Halim bin Sheikh Ismail Pitsuwan al Haj, who passed away yesterday in Bangkok, Thailand on 30 November 2017 at the age of 68.

A decorated career diplomat, intellectual, politician and teacher, Tan Sri Dr. Surin served as Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 2001. During this time, he co-founded the MTFA alongside then-Foreign Affairs Minister of Malaysia and former Prime Minister Tun Dato’ Sri Haji Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

He was also widely regarded as an active leader of forging closer regional ties during his time as Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) between 2008 and 2012.

The MTFA would like to offer our sincerest condolences to our co-founder’s family and friends; as well as to remember Tan Sri Dr. Surin as an ASEAN Statesman and dedicated advocate of deepening bilateral, regional and international relations.
